Fairless Hills went up starting in 1951 as prefab Gunnison homes for the U.S. Steel Fairless Works crews, set on concrete slabs with no basement. Seventy-plus years later most of them have been added onto, re-sided and re-floored more than once, and the slab underneath has usually taken a few patches along the way. For a new floor that means the same discipline as the Levitt houses next door: check the slab for moisture, flatten it, and float a waterproof LVP over it rather than trying to fasten anything down.
Because these are compact ranch layouts, a lot of Fairless Hills jobs are whole-house: kitchen, living room, hall and bedrooms in one continuous run with no transitions cluttering the doorways. We lay the plank in one direction through the whole footprint where the house allows it, which makes a small home feel bigger. The original Gunnison homes are, and so are most of the later additions. That is why floating LVP is the default here: it needs no nails or glue into concrete and it handles the occasional bit of slab moisture far better than laminate or hardwood would.
Usually, and it is what we recommend in a compact rancher. The subfloor has to be flat across every room for that to work, which is the prep we do first. Where an addition sits at a different height we feather it in rather than dropping a transition strip in the middle of a hallway.
